Crackdown on Banned Polythene, Air and Noise Pollution: Fines of BDT 13.96 Lakh, 4,675 kg of Polythene Seized

Staff Reporter:  On 29 January 2025, the Department of Environment conducted enforcement drives across the country, imposing a total fine of BDT 13.96 lakh.

In Chattogram, Noakhali, Jashore, Magura, and Dhaka’s Mirpur and Shantinagar areas, six mobile courts filed nine cases for the production, sale, and distribution of banned polythene, resulting in fines of BDT 2.2 lakh. A total of 4,675 kg of banned polythene was seized, and shop owners were warned against its use.

In Noakhali, Mymensingh, Jashore, Chattogram, and Madaripur, five mobile courts took action against illegal brick kilns, filing six cases and imposing fines of BDT 10 lakh. Operations at five brick kilns were shut down after demolishing their kilns.

In Dhaka’s Jatrabari, a mobile court fined two cases BDT 5,000 for excessive black smoke emissions from vehicles. Ten vehicle drivers were warned.

In Khilgaon, a mobile court fined BDT 3,000 in two cases for air pollution caused by construction materials. Additionally, four establishments in areas from Doel Chattar to Eidgah Field and Bailey Road were warned for leaving bricks, sand, and soil exposed.

In Panchagarh, Natore, Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, and Dhaka’s Jatrabari, five mobile courts fined 16 vehicle drivers BDT 18,000 for noise pollution and confiscated 26 hydraulic horns.

In Chattogram, a mobile court imposed a fine of BDT 50,000 in one case for illegal hill cutting.

The Department of Environment will continue such operations to prevent pollution.
